René Herbst was a pioneer in terms of his use of basic simple industrial material to produce practical and useful furniture.  He used elasticated cords like the ones used to tie parcels on to bicycles, for the back and seat and created a number of different variants on the same theme.  He actually set up his own company to manufacture and sell his designs.
